In November, L.A. folk-rock band The Leaves released the first version of the “murdered-my-girlfriend” tune “Hey Joe,” which would soon rival “Gloria” as the track every garage band needed to know. Everyone from Love to the Byrds covered it, until Jimi Hendrix slowed it down the following year and annihilated all previous comers, backed by the eerie Breakaways trio moaning like the ghost of the slain girlfriend.
