From August to December, the band recorded their second album, Daydream, featuring “You Didn’t Have to Be So Nice,” co-written by lead singer John Sebastian and bassist Steve Boone. With its chiming guitar and warm humming vocals, it made the Top 10 like all of their first seven singles did. The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson later that said the song inspired him to write “God Only Knows,” the centerpiece of Pet Sounds.
